ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal has become hurdle in putting the names of former PM Nawaz Sharif, Maryyam Nawaz and Capt (Retd) Muhammad Safdar on Exit Control List (ECL).
Sources said that Interior Minister has directed Secretary Interior not to consider the application of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in which NAB has asked to include the names of Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryyam Nawaz and Capt (Retd) Muhammad Safdar in ECL.
NAB has written a letter to Interior Ministry to include the names of Nawaz Sharif, Maryyam Nawaz and Capt (Retd) Muhammad Safdar in ECL as the references against them in NAB courts are in final stages.
“NAB fears that accused may not escape abroad before the court verdict therefore it has recommended to included their names in ECL, however Interior Minister has become hurdle in including their names in ECL”, sources added.
When contacted with constitutional experts in this regard, they said that if Interior Ministry did not include their names in ECL then NAB has option to approach the court adding that NAB would have to wait the reply of Interior Ministry. After the refusal of Interior Ministry, NAB can challenge it in High Court.
It is worth-mentioning here that references against Nawaz Sharif, Maryyam Nawaz and Capt (Retd) Muhammad Safdar were filed in NAB on the orders of Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has ordered NAB to decide these references within six months. —PPI
